Figures |

Figures made by Carlton China are quite varied. These consist of some early items, such as the Charlie Chaplin figure, produced early on, together with Birks Rawlins ‘Grotesque' figurines which originally carried the ‘Savoy China' crown, but some of which eventually continued as ‘Carlton China' . The most recognised are of course the series of ladies which were produced in the late 1930's after the Birks Rawlins factory had been closed down. Current wisdom is that these were blanks, produced by the Coalport factory and decorated at the Carlton works before being sold as Carlton China . The story also goes that production was stopped when W & R and Royal Doulton fell out over the likeness between some of their figures, Doulton of course winning that battle. Again these are mostly quite rare and sought after so tend to fetch a premium. They have also been ‘faked' to the extent that some poor quality figures have been seen with Carlton China marks. Finally to confuse the issue further there are some New Carlton Ware ladies on the market from the owner of the Carlton Ware name, Frank Salmon. These are of good quality and are marked ‘Carlton Ware ™' |
